Port of Stockholm
Optimizing crane operations with precision slab track.

In 2019, Stabirail partnered with Bemorail at the Port of Stockholm to construct a state-of-the-art rail system for ship-to-shore (STS) cranes at the Norvik terminal. As a key gateway for cargo in the Baltic Sea region, the port required a durable, efficient, and precise solution to handle high-capacity container traffic.

The challenge
The project scope included:
- 2.4 km of track for STS crane operations
- Installation of 8,000 rail anchors for track stability
The port’s high traffic volumes demanded a solution that combined durability with precision to support continuous operations and minimize downtime.
The solution
Stabirail employed its bottom-up slab track technology, ensuring a robust and efficient rail system designed for heavy port operations:
- STS crane track installation: constructed 2.4 km of millimeter-accurate rail tracks to enable seamless crane movement and efficient cargo handling.
- Anchor installation: installed 8,000 rail anchors using diamond-core drilling, securing long-term track stability under heavy loads.
- Quality control: conducted rigorous alignment checks to ensure optimal performance and long-term reliability.
The Results
The project was delivered on time and met the highest standards of performance:
- Operational efficiency: seamless movement of STS cranes, improving container loading and unloading times.
- Track durability: the anchored slab track system provides long-term stability with minimal maintenance.
- Increased capacity: enhanced efficiency supports the port’s growing cargo throughput.
Added value
Stabirail’s advanced construction methods provided measurable advantages:
- Precision: millimeter-accurate track alignment optimized crane operations.
- Durability: high-quality materials and construction methods ensured long-term performance.
- Sustainability: efficient processes minimized waste and environmental impact.
The Norvik terminal now operates with improved efficiency, positioning the Port of Stockholm as a leading hub for cargo operations in the Baltic region.
