APM Terminal 2
Advancing terminal efficiency with innovative solutions.

Between 2022 and 2023, Stabirail partnered with APM terminal 2 in Tangiers to execute a large-scale rail infrastructure project. This development, part of one of Africa’s busiest ports, required solutions that would support automated rail-mounted gantry (ARMG) operations while integrating new technologies for automation and efficiency.

9.6 km
track length

60.000
magnets
The challenge
The project covered:
- 9.6 km of track for ARMG cranes
- Installation of 60,000 magnets for a magnet grid system
- Leveling of stack plinth surfaces, a new addition to terminal construction projects
The scale of the project and the introduction of new technology required precision, efficiency, and minimal disruption to ongoing operations.
The solution
Stabirail deployed its bottom-up slab track technology, integrating advanced construction methods to address the project’s challenges:
- ARMG crane track installation: built 9.6 km of precision-aligned tracks with millimeter accuracy, ensuring smooth and reliable crane operations.
- Magnet grid installation: drilled and installed 60,000 magnets with automated precision, providing accurate positioning for automated horizontal transportation systems (AHTS).
- Stack plinth leveling: introduced a new leveling system for stack plinth surfaces, ensuring stable ground conditions and supporting automated container stacking operations.
The Results
The project was delivered on time, with significant improvements to terminal operations:
- Enhanced automation: the magnet grid enabled seamless operation of automated equipment, reducing container handling times.
- Operational efficiency: smooth ARMG crane operations increased throughput capacity.
- Future-proof infrastructure: the new stack plinth leveling system created a stable foundation for further automation and expansion.
Added value
Stabirail’s advanced techniques delivered measurable benefits:
- Precision and reliability: state-of-the-art milling and drilling ensured millimeter-accurate track alignment and magnet placement.
- Innovation: the introduction of stack plinth leveling marked a new standard in terminal construction.
- Sustainability: efficient processes reduced material waste and minimized environmental impact.
APM terminal 2 now operates with optimized efficiency, solidifying its position as a leader in automated port operations.
