COSCO terminal
Enhancing port operations with precision renovation.

In 2021, Stabirail partnered with BAM Contractors at COSCO terminal in Zeebruges to renovate the ship-to-shore (STS) crane rail system. As a critical gateway for global trade, the terminal required a rapid, precise, and durable solution to maintain high-performance operations while minimizing downtime.
The challenge
The renovation project involved:
- Removal of grout and existing anchors from the previous rail system
- Drilling new anchors to support STS crane operations
The challenge was to execute these tasks efficiently while ensuring the terminal remained fully operational throughout the renovation.
The solution
Stabirail applied its specialized bottom-up construction techniques to deliver a fast and reliable renovation:
- Grout and anchor removal: used advanced diamond-cutting tools to remove the existing grout and anchors without damaging the concrete foundation.
- Precision drilling: performed millimeter-accurate drilling for new anchor placements, ensuring track stability for STS cranes.
- Anchor installation: installed new rail anchors using a two-component adhesive system to ensure secure and long-lasting rail fixation.
- Alignment verification: conducted comprehensive alignment checks to guarantee precise crane movements.
The Results
The project was completed efficiently and within the scheduled timeframe, providing immediate operational improvements:
- Seamless crane operations: the new anchors ensured stable, smooth crane movements for efficient cargo handling.
- Long-term durability: the renovation extended the lifespan of the rail system with minimal future maintenance needs.
- Operational continuity: Stabirail’s fast and efficient process minimized disruptions during the renovation.
Added value
Stabirail’s advanced techniques delivered measurable benefits:
- Precision and reliability: high-accuracy drilling and anchor installation optimized crane performance.
- Efficiency: rapid completion minimized downtime and operational disruptions.
- Sustainability: removal methods reduced waste, and the long-lasting anchor system lowered future maintenance needs.
With the upgraded rail system, COSCO terminal is well-positioned to handle increasing cargo volumes, enhancing its role as a key logistics hub in Zeebruges.
