What are the advantages of bottom-up slabtrack railways?

At Stabirail, we specialize in the construction of innovative bottom-up slab track systems, redefining railway infrastructure through unmatched performance, sustainability, and cost-effectiveness.

Here’s why our slab track railways stand out as the optimal choice for modern railway construction:

Cost-effectiveness

Investing in bottom-up slab track systems pays off in the long term. While the initial construction costs may be higher than traditional ballasted tracks, the near-elimination of maintenance needs ensures significant savings over the lifecycle of the system. Unlike ballasted tracks, which require frequent maintenance—particularly for high-speed or intensive used routes—Stabirail’s slab track offers:

  • Reduced maintenance costs: minimal upkeep thanks to precise and durable construction.
  • Long-term value: cost efficiency over the service life, with operational stability maintained for decades.

Durability and maintenance

Stabirail’s slab track systems are engineered for a minimum lifespan of 60 years. Withstanding time and wear, our systems eliminate deformation issues common in traditional tracks, ensuring:

  • Enhanced stability: accurate to within 2 mm, with no settling or displacement.
  • Reduced rail wear: consistent alignment minimizes wear and prolongs replacement intervals.

Compared to ballasted railways, slab track lasts longer because it cannot sink and the original construction doesn’t change. Traditional railroads on ballast need regular maintenance because the ballast shifts due to vibrations. As a result, traditional rails will shift and must be brought back into position with a dedicated tamping machine.

Additionally, no weeds can grow between the tracks, no sprays are needed against weeds that might interfere with the track switchers.

As a result, the rails will always remain in the same position, causing less wear on the rails. Even after 25 years with minimal maintenance, our tracks continue to deliver flawless performance.

Vibration-Free Performance

Unlike traditional systems, Stabirail’s slab track effectively distributes vibrations caused by passing trains. This means:

  • Reduced impact: vibrations are not transmitted to surrounding structures or the ground.
  • Greater comfort: less disruption to nearby areas and infrastructure.

Space Efficiency

Bottom-up slab track requires less construction height and floor space than traditional methods. The reinforced concrete construction can support far more loads at a limited height compared to ballast track.

This makes it ideal for:

  • Tunnels: smaller tunnel diameters reduce costs and construction time.
  • Bridges: lighter construction minimizes the load on bridge structures, enabling more efficient designs.

Sustainability

Our bottom-up slab track system is a more environmentally friendly alternative compared to any other builder method. Fewer materials, lower transport requirements, and more sustainable operations, our system aligns with modern green standards, improving public perception and environmental compliance.

  • Reduced material use: less concrete is needed compared to conventional slab track.
  • Lower emissions: compact machinery and reduced transportation requirements lead to minimal environmental impact.
  • Longevity: extended service life reduces the need for replacement materials.
  • Recycling: as there is no mix of different materials all can be easily separated during demolition for re-use

Faster construction times

Stabirail’s pioneering bottom-up construction method streamlines the installation process, allowing for much faster daily track-laying speeds compared to traditional slab track methods.

Pouring the concrete foundation can be done quickly with a “slipform paver”. Once the concrete is poured, the continuous installation process starts.

Other construction work can take place simultaneously, directly behind the “Stabirail train”, shortening the construction schedule of the entire project.
